How to Use This AACOMAS GPA Calculator

Enter each course with its category (Science or Non-Science), grade, and credit hours. For retaken courses, check the "Retake?" box and enter the original course name — AACOMAS will exclude the original grade and keep only the most recent attempt.

The calculator also shows your AMCAS equivalent GPA (all attempts counted) so you can see the difference that grade replacement makes. This comparison is especially useful if you are applying to both MD and DO programs in the same cycle.

The Advanced tier adds full AMCAS vs AACOMAS side-by-side comparison with retake strategy analysis. The Professional tier adds multi-year transcript tracking and DO school matching based on average matriculant GPAs.

AACOMAS GPA Formula

Science GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Science Credits
Non-Science GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Non-Science Credits
Cumulative GPA = Σ(All Grade Points × Credits) ÷ All Credits

Grade Replacement: if a course is retaken, the original grade is EXCLUDED.

AACOMAS (the DO school application system) applies grade replacement — when you retake a course, the original attempt is excluded and only the most recent grade counts. This is the opposite of AMCAS (MD schools), which counts all attempts. If you retook several science courses, your AACOMAS GPA could be meaningfully higher than your AMCAS GPA.

AACOMAS Science Category Guide

Science: Biology, Chemistry (all types), Physics, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science

Non-Science: Psychology, Sociology, English, History, Economics, Fine Arts, Foreign Languages, Philosophy, Anthropology, Political Science

Note: AACOMAS science categories are broader than AMCAS BCPM. Computer Science and Statistics count as science in AACOMAS, and Psychology/Sociology count as Non-Science (unlike some MD school requirements).

GPA alone does not determine admission. MCAT, experiences, and essays matter equally.

Average AACOMAS GPA for DO Matriculants

The average AACOMAS science GPA for DO matriculants is approximately 3.45–3.55, and cumulative GPA around 3.55–3.65 (AACOM data). Individual DO schools vary — some accept applicants with science GPAs below 3.2 if MCAT and other factors are strong.

If your AACOMAS GPA is below 3.2, consider whether a post-baccalaureate program or additional science courses (which count as retakes or new work) could bring the number up before applying. The Professional tier's school matching shows which programs are within your range.

Applying to Both MD and DO Programs

Many applicants apply to both AMCAS (MD) and AACOMAS (DO) programs simultaneously. If you retook courses, your AACOMAS GPA will typically be higher than your AMCAS GPA — sometimes by a significant margin. Medical school applicants should calculate both GPAs before strategizing which programs to target.

The Advanced tier's side-by-side comparison shows you both numbers using the same course data, so you can assess your competitiveness across both MD and DO tiers with one set of inputs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AACOMAS replace grades when you retake a course?
Yes — AACOMAS applies grade replacement. When you retake a course, the original grade is excluded and only the most recent attempt counts toward your GPA. This is the key difference from AMCAS (MD schools), which counts all attempts. If you retook several courses, your AACOMAS GPA may be noticeably higher than your AMCAS GPA.
How does AACOMAS calculate GPA differently from AMCAS?
The main difference is grade replacement (AACOMAS) vs all-attempts-counted (AMCAS). Additionally, AACOMAS uses "Science" and "Non-Science" categories rather than AMCAS's BCPM/AO breakdown. AACOMAS also includes subjects like Statistics and Computer Science in its science category.
Can I apply to both MD and DO programs in the same cycle?
Yes — many applicants submit both AMCAS and AACOMAS applications in the same cycle. There is no rule against it. Each system calculates GPA independently using its own rules. Applicants who retook science courses often find their AACOMAS GPA is meaningfully higher, making DO programs particularly competitive.
Does a withdrawal (W) affect my AACOMAS GPA?
A standard W (withdrawal) does not count in GPA under AACOMAS — it does not affect your numeric calculation. However, it remains visible on your transcript. Multiple Ws may prompt questions during interviews, particularly if they occurred in science courses. AACOMAS does not recognize a separate WF category — verify how your institution coded the grade.
Do community college courses count in AACOMAS?
Yes — AACOMAS requires you to self-report all college coursework from all institutions, including community colleges. These grades count fully. Community college science courses taken to complete prerequisites count in your science GPA. Post-baccalaureate courses also count fully.
