AKTU CGPA Calculation

The credit-weighted average formula is used for semester and cumulative GPA:

CGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)

AKTU CGPA to Percentage Formula

AKTU uses the following official formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 10 − 7.5

So a CGPA of 8.0 = 8 × 10 − 7.5 = 72.5%. This formula applies to students under the AKTU syllabus 2013 and later. Students under the 2004 or 2009 syllabus may use different conversion factors — check your admission year's regulations.

AKTU Percentage examples:

CGPA 9.5 → 9.5 × 10 − 7.5 = 87.5%

CGPA 8.0 → 8.0 × 10 − 7.5 = 72.5%

CGPA 7.0 → 7.0 × 10 − 7.5 = 62.5%

CGPA 6.0 → 6.0 × 10 − 7.5 = 52.5%

AKTU Back Paper (Backlog) Policy

Students with back papers receive an F grade (0 points) for that subject, which reduces CGPA significantly. AKTU allows students to clear backlogs in subsequent semesters. The number of live backlogs affects your eligibility for final year project and placement participation at many affiliated colleges.

Frequently Asked Questions

AKTU is the renamed version of UPTU. The grading scale changed with the 2013 syllabus revision. Students under the UPTU 2004 or 2009 syllabus used a different percentage-based system. The current 10-point CGPA system with the formula CGPA × 10 − 7.5 applies to all AKTU students from the 2013 syllabus onwards.
A CGPA of 7.0 (62.5%) is sufficient for most service-based IT company placements (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant). Many product companies and top IT firms set their cutoff at 7.5–8.0+. Core engineering companies and PSUs typically require 65–70%+ equivalent.
Under AKTU regulations, a student can have a maximum of 2 back papers (failed subjects) to be promoted to the next semester. More than 2 backlogs may result in the student being detained in the current year. Specific rules depend on the syllabus year.
Yes. All subjects — theory, practicals, sessional work, and projects — are included in the CGPA calculation at AKTU. Each carries credits proportional to the hours of instruction per week, and the grade points earned are weighted accordingly.
AKTU MTech admissions require a minimum of 55% (CGPA ~6.25) for general category candidates and 50% (CGPA ~5.75) for reserved categories. Candidates with GATE scores get priority. Higher CGPA improves your chances of merit-based admission without a GATE score.
