How to Use the EZ Grader

Enter the total number of questions and how many were answered incorrectly in the Quick Grade tab above. The calculator instantly shows the percentage and letter grade plus a complete grading chart for every possible wrong-answer count on that test. Switch to Custom Scale to override the default grade cutoffs with your school's specific percentages.

The Advanced calculator below adds batch grading for multiple students with full grade distribution. For professional-grade class analytics, curve suggestions, and statistics, scroll to the Professional tier.

Formula

Score % = ((Total โˆ’ Wrong) รท Total) ร— 100

Example: 3 wrong out of 30 total
= ((30 โˆ’ 3) รท 30) ร— 100 = (27 รท 30) ร— 100 = 90.00% โ†’ A-

Default Grade Scale

A+ โ‰ฅ 97% | A โ‰ฅ 93% | A- โ‰ฅ 90% | B+ โ‰ฅ 87% | B โ‰ฅ 83% | B- โ‰ฅ 80%
C+ โ‰ฅ 77% | C โ‰ฅ 73% | C- โ‰ฅ 70% | D+ โ‰ฅ 67% | D โ‰ฅ 63% | D- โ‰ฅ 60% | F < 60%

Worked Example

Test: 30 questions total, student got 3 wrong.

Correct = 30 โˆ’ 3 = 27

Score = (27 รท 30) ร— 100 = 90.00% โ†’ A-

The grading chart also shows that getting 4 wrong = 86.67% (B), 5 wrong = 83.33% (B), 6 wrong = 80.00% (B-).

Why Use a Grading Chart?

Teachers who grade many tests by hand can use the chart as a quick lookup table. Instead of re-calculating each paper, just count the wrong answers and read off the percentage and letter grade from the pre-computed table. This saves time and reduces math errors when grading large classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

An EZ Grader (or Easy Grader) is a simple tool โ€” traditionally a paper sliding scale โ€” that teachers use to quickly look up the percentage grade for any number of wrong answers on a given test. This digital version replaces the physical tool and adds features like custom scales and shareable links.
Typically skipped questions count as wrong answers unless your teacher has a different policy. Enter the total number of questions on the test and the number that were either wrong or skipped as your "number wrong" input.
Switch to the Custom Scale tab and update any letter grade cutoff you need. For example, if your school sets A starting at 94% instead of 93%, just change the A field to 94. The calculator will immediately re-grade using your updated cutoffs.
Yes โ€” use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P). The site is print-optimized, and the grading chart will print cleanly. You can also take a screenshot of the chart to use as a quick reference when grading.
Yes. The grading chart will generate a row for every possible wrong-answer count from 0 to the total. For a 100-question test, that's 101 rows. You can scroll through the full table or use your browser's search function to jump to a specific row.
