How Nigeria's Grading System Works

Nigerian universities use a 5.0 CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) scale, which is distinct from both the US 4.0 scale and many other countries' systems. The National Universities Commission (NUC) regulates this system across all accredited Nigerian universities, including the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, and others.

The Nigerian system classifies degrees into five honors classes: First Class (4.50–5.00), Second Class Upper (3.50–4.49), Second Class Lower (2.40–3.49), Third Class (1.50–2.39), and Pass (1.00–1.49). A CGPA below 1.0 results in a fail or academic dismissal. These class designations follow the British tradition inherited during colonialism.
