Weighted GPA Calculator
Calculate your weighted GPA on the 5.0 scale with AP (+1.0) and Honors (+0.5) bonuses. Three precision levels — from quick calculation to full course optimization.
Regular = no bonus · Honors = +0.5 (max 4.5) · AP/IB = +1.0 (max 5.0)
How to Use This Weighted GPA Calculator
Enter each course with its grade, credit hours, and type (Regular, Honors, or AP/IB). The Calculate tab shows your weighted GPA instantly with the bonus applied, and the Compare tab displays a side-by-side breakdown of weighted vs. unweighted points per course.
The Advanced tier below adds a semester-by-semester tracker that charts the weighted vs. unweighted GPA gap over time, plus scenario presets for different course rigor levels. For a complete transcript analysis with subject-area boost breakdowns and a Course Optimizer showing the exact GPA impact of upgrading each course, scroll to the Professional tier.
Weighted GPA Formula
Weighted Points: Regular = Grade Points (max 4.0)
Honors = Grade Points + 0.5 (max 4.5)
AP / IB = Grade Points + 1.0 (max 5.0)
Note: An F (0.0) receives no bonus regardless of course type
The bonus is added to the grade point value, not as a separate calculation. A B+ (3.3) in an AP course becomes 4.3 weighted points, but a failing grade (0.0) in any course type stays at 0.0.
Weighted vs. Unweighted Comparison Example
AP Calculus AB — A- (1 credit): Weighted 4.7 | Unweighted 3.7
Honors English — B+ (1 credit): Weighted 3.8 | Unweighted 3.3
Regular History — B (1 credit): Weighted 3.0 | Unweighted 3.0
AP Chemistry — B (1 credit): Weighted 4.0 | Unweighted 3.0
Weighted GPA: (4.7 + 3.8 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 4 = 3.88
Unweighted GPA: (3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.0) ÷ 4 = 3.25
Rigor bonus: +0.63

Which GPA Do Colleges Use?
Practices vary significantly. The Common App asks for unweighted GPA. UC schools calculate their own weighted GPA using a specific formula. Most selective colleges recalculate GPA internally on their own scale regardless of what your transcript shows. Taking rigorous AP/IB courses and earning strong grades in them matters more than the raw GPA number.
