About CBSE CGPA System

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced a 10-point grading system for Class 10 (Secondary) examinations in 2009, replacing the marks-based system. The CBSE CGPA system is designed to reduce exam pressure by replacing absolute marks with grade bands, allowing students to be evaluated across broader performance categories.

CBSE Grade Scale (Class 10)

A1 = 10 points (91–100%) — Outstanding
A2 = 9 points (81–90%) — Excellent
B1 = 8 points (71–80%) — Very Good
B2 = 7 points (61–70%) — Good
C1 = 6 points (51–60%) — Average
C2 = 5 points (41–50%) — Satisfactory
D = 4 points (33–40%) — Pass
E = 0 points (below 33%) — Fail/Essential Repeat

CBSE CGPA Calculation

CBSE CGPA is calculated as the simple average of grade points in the 5 main subjects (excluding additional/6th subject):

CGPA = (Sum of Grade Points in 5 main subjects) ÷ 5

Note: CBSE traditionally assigns equal weight (1 credit each) to the 5 compulsory subjects. The 6th additional subject can improve the CGPA if it replaces a lower-scoring subject.

CBSE CGPA to Percentage Formula

CBSE officially endorses the following conversion formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

This is the formula approved by CBSE and is used in official correspondence. For example, a CGPA of 9.0 equals approximately 85.5%. This formula is valid for Class 10 results. Class 12 reverted to marks-based grading in 2017.

Example calculation for a Class 10 student:

Mathematics: A1 (10 pts) | Science: A2 (9 pts) | Social Science: A2 (9 pts)

English: B1 (8 pts) | Hindi: B2 (7 pts)

CGPA = (10 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 7) ÷ 5 = 43 ÷ 5 = 8.6

Percentage = 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%

The 6th Subject Rule

CBSE allows students who took a 6th elective subject to substitute it for the lowest-scoring subject when calculating CGPA. This can significantly boost the final score. Always check if this applies to your marksheet.

CBSE Grading for Class 12

Since 2017, CBSE Class 12 results are reported as marks (out of 100) rather than grade points. The CGPA system described above applies primarily to Class 10. However, students may use the percentage from Class 12 marks to calculate a comparable CGPA figure for comparison purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 9.5 multiplier was chosen because a student scoring at the bottom of the A1 grade band (91 marks) would get a CGPA of 10.0, which would convert to 95% using ×9.5 — not 100%. This accounts for the fact that the top grade band covers 91–100%, so the midpoint/minimum is used in the conversion. The ×9.5 formula is an approximation intended to be a conservative lower bound.
The 10-point CGPA system was primarily for Class 10. Since the 2017 batch, Class 12 boards report percentage marks and letter grades rather than CGPA. Some schools internally use CGPA for reporting Class 11 internal exams, but official Board results use marks.
Most reputed CBSE schools require a CGPA of 8.0–9.0 for science stream (PCM/PCB) admission in Class 11. For commerce, the requirement is typically lower — 7.0–7.5. Less competitive schools may admit with CGPA of 6.0 for science.
IIT JEE (Advanced) requires a minimum of 75% marks (Class 12) or equivalent CGPA 7.9 for general category. NEET requires a minimum of 50% in PCB (Class 12). These are entrance exam eligibility criteria — Class 10 CGPA does not affect JEE or NEET eligibility.
For international undergraduate applications (UK, US, Canada, Australia), CBSE Class 12 percentage marks are used — not Class 10 CGPA. Most institutions evaluate Indian students on Class 12 performance. Class 10 CGPA may sometimes be requested as additional academic history, converted using the CGPA × 9.5 formula.
