About Delhi University CBCS Grading System

The University of Delhi (DU) implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in 2015. The CBCS introduced a 10-point GPA scale for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs, replacing the older marks-based classification. Delhi University is one of India's most prestigious central universities, with over 77 affiliated colleges.

Delhi University Grade Scale (CBCS)

O = 10 points (90–100%) — Outstanding
A+ = 9 points (80–89%) — Excellent
A = 8 points (70–79%) — Very Good
B+ = 7 points (60–69%) — Good
B = 6 points (50–59%) — Above Average
C = 5 points (45–49%) — Average
P = 4 points (40–44%) — Pass
F = 0 points (below 40%) — Fail

How GPA is Calculated at Delhi University

DU uses Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) for individual semesters and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for the entire program:

SGPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits) [per semester]
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits per semester) ÷ Σ(Total Credits)

DU GPA to Percentage Formula

Delhi University uses a simple linear formula consistent with UGC guidelines:

Percentage = GPA × 10

Example for a BA Honours student:

Semester 1: Core subject O (10 pts, 6 credits) + Elective A+ (9 pts, 4 credits)

SGPA = (60 + 36) ÷ 10 = 9.6

Percentage equivalent = 9.6 × 10 = 96%

Frequently Asked Questions

Since 2015, DU officially uses the CBCS GPA system for all programs. However, the marksheets show both marks and grade points. The CGPA is the primary metric for degree classification and postgraduate admissions. Employers increasingly accept CGPA directly.
DU's postgraduate programs set merit cutoffs that typically require a CGPA of 7.0–8.5+ depending on the course and college. Highly competitive programs like MA Economics at Delhi School of Economics may require CGPA 9.0+. Entrance tests (DUET) also factor in for many programs.
JNU also uses CBCS with a similar 10-point scale. The grade descriptors are slightly different — JNU uses O (10), A+ (9), A (8), B+ (7), B (6), C (5), D (4), F (0). Both universities' CGPA scales are broadly comparable for admission purposes, though individual institutions may evaluate them differently.
Yes. UPSC only requires a bachelor's degree for IAS eligibility — there is no minimum percentage requirement for Civil Services examinations. However, your GPA may matter for other competitive exams (SSC, banking, railways) that specify minimum percentage criteria.
All semesters — including those before a subject change — are included in the cumulative CGPA. Credits are weighted across all semesters completed. In rare cases of program transfers, DU's Examination Branch applies a standardized credit transfer formula.
