OTCAS GPA Calculations

OTCAS Cumulative GPA = All graded coursework ÷ Total credit hours
OTCAS Science GPA = Science courses only ÷ Total science credit hours

Science courses for OT: Biology, Anatomy/Physiology, Kinesiology, Statistics, Chemistry

OTCAS (Occupational Therapy Centralized Application Service) calculates its own GPA and reports both cumulative and science GPAs. Like PTCAS, OTCAS includes all attempted courses including repeats. The psychology and social sciences GPA is particularly important for OT programs given the profession's focus on psychosocial function.

OT Program GPA Benchmarks

3.7+: Top OTD doctoral programs (USC, Boston University, Tufts)

3.5+: Competitive for most OTD programs; strong MOT candidacy

3.0–3.49: Eligible for most ACOTE-accredited programs with strong observation hours

Below 3.0: Below typical minimums — strengthen prerequisites or pursue post-bacc work

Observation hours: 40+ hours recommended; many top programs expect 80+ across diverse settings

What GPA Do You Need for OT Programs?

Most ACOTE-accredited OT programs require a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA to apply. The average incoming GPA for MOT programs is approximately 3.3–3.4, while OTD programs typically admit students with 3.5+. USC's OTD program (top-ranked) typically admits students with 3.7+ GPAs.

OTD vs MOT Programs

The field has largely transitioned to entry-level doctoral programs. The OTD (Occupational Therapy Doctorate) is the entry-level degree at most programs, similar to PT's shift to DPT. Some programs still offer the MOT (Master of Occupational Therapy). The clinical skill set is similar; OTD programs typically have an additional doctoral capstone project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most programs recommend 40+ hours of OT observation, though top programs expect 80–100+ hours across diverse settings (pediatrics, mental health, physical rehabilitation, schools, geriatrics). Variety of settings matters — observing only one type of OT practice weakens your application.
Common prerequisites include: Anatomy & Physiology (I and II), General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Human Development/Lifespan, Sociology, Statistics, and Biology. Some programs also require Kinesiology, Medical Terminology, or a course in research methods. Requirements vary by program, so check each school's website directly.
Yes — OTCAS calculates GPA using all attempted coursework including repeated courses. Both the original grade and the retake will appear in your OTCAS GPA. Some programs may view upward grade trends positively, so a retake can still strengthen your application even if the GPA impact is modest.
GRE requirements have become less uniform. Many programs dropped the GRE requirement after 2020. Some programs still recommend or require it. Check each program's current requirements. If required, aim for V: 150+, Q: 148+, AW: 3.5+ for competitive candidacy.
Specialization choice is typically made after entering OT school through clinical rotations. Before applying, demonstrating interest in a specialty through observation hours in that setting strengthens applications. Pediatrics requires strong human development and psychology background; physical rehabilitation emphasizes anatomy and kinesiology; mental health OT relies heavily on psychology and sociology coursework.
