SOPHAS GPA Calculation

SOPHAS Cumulative GPA = All graded coursework ÷ Total credit hours
SOPHAS Science GPA = Science/quantitative courses ÷ Science credit hours
SOPHAS Non-Science GPA = Social sciences, humanities, policy courses

CEPH 5 Core Areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Health Policy, Social/Behavioral Sciences

SOPHAS (Schools of Public Health Application Service) calculates GPA from all undergraduate and graduate coursework. Unlike medical school calculators (AMCAS/AACOMAS), SOPHAS does not typically separate grades by year. Both your overall GPA and your performance in the CEPH five core areas are evaluated.

MPH and DrPH GPA Benchmarks

3.7+: Highly competitive for Harvard SPH, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg, Columbia Mailman

3.5+: Competitive for most top-25 SPH programs and DrPH applicants

3.2–3.49: Eligible for most SOPHAS MPH programs; strengthen with PH experience

3.0–3.19: Meets many program minimums; professional experience often weighs heavily

Note: Public health programs value field experience, volunteer work, and professional background alongside GPA more than many other health professions

What GPA Do You Need for MPH Programs?

Most SOPHAS-affiliated MPH programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA, though the average incoming GPA at competitive programs is higher. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health typically admit students with 3.6–3.8 GPAs. However, public health programs place unusual emphasis on relevant work experience, which can partially offset a lower GPA.

CEPH Accreditation and the Five Core Areas

CEPH (Council on Education for Public Health) accredits schools and programs of public health. A CEPH-accredited MPH requires demonstrated foundational competencies in five core areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Health Policy & Management, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. Strong performance in all five areas strengthens your application profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is challenging but possible. Public health programs sometimes make exceptions for applicants with extensive public health work experience (5+ years), strong upward GPA trends, or exceptional professional accomplishments. Some programs offer provisional admission or conditional acceptance. A compelling personal statement highlighting relevant experience can strengthen a borderline application.
GRE requirements vary significantly. Many programs made the GRE optional during the pandemic and have maintained that policy. Top programs like Harvard SPH and Johns Hopkins may still use GRE as a strong differentiator. When required, competitive scores for public health are approximately V: 155+, Q: 150+, AW: 3.5+.
The MPH (Master of Public Health) is the standard professional degree, typically 42–60 credits over 1–2 years. The DrPH (Doctor of Public Health) is an advanced practice doctorate designed for experienced public health professionals seeking leadership roles. The PhD in public health is research-focused and appropriate for those pursuing academic careers. DrPH programs typically require 3–4 years and extensive professional experience for admission.
SOPHAS requires official transcripts from all institutions attended, including international colleges. For non-US transcripts, a credential evaluation by an NACES-approved agency (such as WES or ECE) is required. Grades are converted to the US 4.0 scale. International coursework is fully included in your SOPHAS GPA calculation.
More important than in most other graduate health programs. Top MPH programs explicitly value real-world public health experience — epidemiology work, community health roles, global health service, policy work, or clinical experience. A candidate with a 3.2 GPA and three years of meaningful PH fieldwork is often more competitive than a 3.8 GPA candidate with no PH experience.
