How to Use This Calculator

Enter each prerequisite course with its subject category (Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, etc.), letter grade, and credit hours. Your overall PTCAS cumulative GPA and science GPA calculate instantly — PTCAS reports both to every DPT program you apply to.

The Advanced calculator lets you track prerequisites by semester, model DPT application scenarios (competitive applicant, career changer, re-applicant), and view an overall application profile with GRE scores and observation hours. The Professional tier provides a full prerequisite tracker, top program GPA comparison, and retake simulator.

PTCAS GPA Calculations

PTCAS Cumulative GPA = All graded coursework ÷ Total credit hours
PTCAS Science GPA = Science courses only ÷ Total science credit hours

Science courses: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, Physiology, Statistics, Math

PTCAS (Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service) calculates its own GPA — it does not use the GPA on your transcript. PTCAS counts every science course you've ever taken, including repeated courses, which means a poor grade from freshman year can still affect your calculated GPA even if your school uses grade forgiveness.

DPT Program GPA Benchmarks

3.7+ cumulative / 3.7+ science: Competitive for top-ranked programs (USC, Pittsburgh, Northwestern)

3.5+ cumulative / 3.5+ science: Competitive for most CAPTE-accredited programs

3.3–3.49: Eligible for many programs; clinical experience and GRE scores matter more

Below 3.0: Below typical minimums — consider post-bacc coursework or grade replacement

What GPA Do You Need for DPT Programs?

Most DPT programs require a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and 3.0 science GPA to apply. The average incoming GPA at CAPTE-accredited programs is approximately 3.5. Top-ranked programs (University of Southern California, University of Pittsburgh, Northwestern) typically admit students with 3.7+ cumulative and science GPAs.

PTCAS vs. Your Transcript GPA

PTCAS calculates its own GPA from your official transcripts and it is frequently different from your institution's GPA. PTCAS includes all repeated courses — it does not honor grade forgiveness policies. This means if you retook Chemistry I to replace a C with an A, PTCAS still counts both grades. Plan accordingly when using this calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most programs require 40–120+ documented observation hours in physical therapy settings. Top programs expect 100+ hours across diverse settings (acute care, outpatient ortho, pediatrics, etc.). Quality of experience (variety of settings, shadowing licensed PTs) matters as much as quantity.
PTCAS counts both the original and retaken grade — it does not use grade replacement. Your PTCAS GPA will include both attempts, though some programs may give more weight to recent performance. Use the Retake Simulator in the Professional tier to calculate the exact impact.
GRE requirements vary by program. Many programs have made GRE optional post-pandemic, but some still require or recommend it. Competitive scores (V: 155+, Q: 152+, AW: 4.0+) can strengthen applications from borderline GPA candidates. Check each program's current requirements on their website.
PTCAS science GPA includes: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, Physiology, Statistics, Kinesiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and other natural sciences. Math and psychology courses may or may not be included depending on how they are categorized. Social sciences and humanities do not count toward science GPA.
Yes — most programs allow you to apply with some prerequisites in progress, as long as they will be completed before enrollment. PTCAS has fields to indicate courses in progress. Some programs require specific prerequisites completed before the application deadline, so review each program's requirements carefully.
